Gloucestershire | Down Hatherley | War Memorial
St Mary & Corpus Christi, Down Hatherley Ordnance Survey reference: SO 868224 War Memorials |
A dark bronze plaque by the door:
IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF DOWN HATHERLEY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 THOMAS WHEELER ALBERT JOHN PRIDAY HENRY GEORGE SMITH M.M. JOHN DAVIS R.I.P. |
A brass plaque:
IN LOVING MEMORY OF SQUADRON LEADER RONALD E.S. SMITH D.F.C. & BAR R.A.F. KILLED ON ACTIVE SERVICE 9TH SEPTEMBER 1944 |
There are two stained glass windows of note:
The first shows an “Arthurian” style knight setting out on a quest. The text in the window reads:
To the Greater Glory of God
and in memory of
Thomas Villers Tuthill
Thacker Neville
The second window depicts the same knight having a vison of the Holy Grail: the dedication reads:
Captain 3rd Dragoon Guards
Killed in action at Ypres
on Ascension Day 1915
Inscriptions in the stone beneath the two windows read, respectively:
Erected by Launa Hughes Martin his betrothed wife.
And:
Erected by Zoe Robinson his sister
[I suspect that the face of the knight in these windows is actually that of
the man commemorated, but this is just a conjecture on my part]
A dark bronze tablet:

Note: Jaffray Selous Jones appears to have been a student at Birmingham University: His name appears on the Birmingham University War Memorial. He is also listed on the Twigworth war memorial, though a middle initial is different on that memorial: I need to check this, the next time I’m in the area.
