West Midlands | Birmingham University | War Memorial
Birmingham University was formerly in Warwickshire, and is now in the West MIdlands county.
This is located in the entrance hall to the Aston Webb building. There is this inscription:
From August 1914 to April 1919
these Buildings were used
by the military authorities as the
1st Southern General Hospital
Within these walls men died for their country
Let those who come after live in the same service.
Lining the walls, there are five panels of names – I’ve added numbered links to small notes about four of the names.

Notes on some WW I names:
1.Lawrence B. Carlton was an old boy of Worcester Grammar School, and appears on the school memorial
- Jaffray Fryer Selous Jones came from Down Hatherly, Gloucestershire: He is listed on the Twigworth war memorial and is listed (with other relatives) on a memorial plaque in Down Hatherley church.
- Dr Elizabeth Impey was on her way to India when her ship was torpedoed
near Malta in December 1914 - Jeffery Knaggs has written to me with this information: “Kenneth John Knaggs was born 9 Jan 1897 in Trinidad.
He was the son of Sir Samuel William Knaggs K.C.M.G.
He joined the Royal Flying Corps in August 1916 and took part in the
first dog-fight with the Richthofen “flying circus”.
He died 16 March 1918 in another dog-fight over Hamel in France. - Rudolph Vincent Surr was an old boy of Malvern College. More information about him, including a photograph, can be found on Malvern College’s web site, on the Old Malvernians Killed in WW 1 web page (external link)
