Notes
1. Local History Magazine printed a 4 page illustrated article about
Campden’s Book of Remembrance in the January/February 1998 issue. Reprints of
this article are available in St James’ church.
Local History magazine’s website is here, but it doesn’t have the article online. Paul R. Hughes is writing a book on the history of Campden in World War I.
If you have information on a Campden man who served in the Great War, he would
like to hear from you. (Email to: prh@tbshs.demon.co.uk) Paul Hughes has pointed out that William Charles HEDGES appears on a
number of memorials in the local area. Besides the memorials listed above,
he is also listed on the Aston sub Edge and
Mickleton memorials. He had worked for the Earl
of Harrowby at Sandon (Staffs.), and his name also appears on the memorial for the Sandon estate. There is also an individual memorial to Francis Osborne in Blockley church.
Ernest Crisp, listed as an old boy of the Grammar School, actually
came from Evesham. There is a memorial plaque to him in the church
of St. Lawrence, Evesham and on the Evesham Abbey Park Memorial Donald Jupp, listed on the grammar school memorial, was a native of
Bledington, Oxfordshire, and his name is listed on the war memorial in that village. He is
also listed on the memorial at Lee on Solent, commemorating those of the Fleet
Air Arm with no known graves. [source: Evesham Journal, 13 April 2000,
reporting the publication of the Bledington Book of Honours].
Andy Allanson-Parsons’ website has a collection of photographs of Oxfordshire war memorials, and other material at http://www.wargunner.co.uk, and this includes a photograph of the Bledington War Memorial[this page is within a frame, so to get to the remainder of the site other than war memorials, use the first link listed]
