Stained Glass Window (1)

Stained Glass Window Memorial to John Davis and John Harold Phillips
Chaddesley Parish Church (St Cassian’s)
This memorial is situated in the South aisle of the church, facing West and was presented by the parishioners in remembrance of two men who lost their lives in the Second World War. A few fragments of ancient glass have been incorporated into this window.
The window includes inscriptions presented as if on a scroll. Some of the scrolling is depicted as overlapping and associated words, or parts of words, are therefore absent. The symbol [ ] is used to depict this effect.
The first ‘scrolled’ inscription is towards the top of the window and encompasses both main window panels:

BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH AND I WILL [ ] A CROWN OF LIFE

The second ‘scrolled’ inscription also stretches across both window panels and is towards the bottom of the window:

I AM THE RESU[ ]ECTION AND THE LIFE, SAITH THE LORD. HE THAT BELIEVETH ON
ME, THOUGH HE WERE DEAD, YET SHALL HE LIVE.

Two small glass panels side-by side at the bottom of the window commemorate the fallen:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO HONOUR THE MEMORY OF SIDNEY

JOHN DAVIS AND JOHN HAROLD PHILLIPS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN

THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945, THIS WINDOW WAS GIVEN TO THE CHURCH BY THE
PARISHIONERS OF CHADDESLEY CORBETT

Stained Glass Window (2)

Stained Glass Window Memorial to John Harold Phillips, Chaddesley Parish Church (St Cassians)
This East facing window in the South Aisle was restored by the parents of John Harold Phillips who was killed in Egypt 1940. A few fragments of coloured glass have been incorporated into the windows . Much of the colour in the window is in the form of various flower species including: rose, daffodil, crocus, pansy, hyacinth, hydrangea and daisy.
The inscription is at the bottom of the window and is depicted in the form of a scroll stretching across all three main window panels:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD. IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN HAROLD PHILLIPS

KILLED IN ACTION NEAR SIDI-BARRANI ON DECEMBER 15TH 1940,AGED 20, THIS WINDOW
WAS RESTORED BY HIS PARENTS

Boer War memorial

This Boer War memorial is found in the Church yard of St Cassian’s.
It consists of a slim octagonal column set on the base of the medieval church cross. On top of the column is a carved block with niches containing figures of Christ on a cross and angels.
Carved into a stone block at the base is the badly eroded inscription:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF
HENRY CAIRNS OLDNALL R.F.A.
WHO WAS KILLED AT (…….) SOUTH AFRICA JANUARY 29 1901
THIS MEMORIAL CROSS WAS RESTORED 1903

Extract from ‘A History of St Cassian’s Church, Chaddesley Corbett’ by John Roper. Published by The Friends of St Cassian’s Church Chaddesley Corbett 1978. P19

“In 1904 (sic), the ancient churchyard cross, the base of which had for many years been used to support a sundial pillar, was renovated by the family of Lady Crease, of Sion House, in memory of Captain H. C. Oldnall, killed in South Africa during the Boer War. An important adjunct of the mediaeval church which had no doubt been badly mutilated or even partially destroyed in Puritan times was thus restored to Chaddesley.”
