St Faith’s, Overbury Ordnance Survey reference: SO 957374 War Memorial

NOTE: Several names (Edward Holland-Martin, Hubert W Festing, O.W.
Devereux and Maurice C. Festing, possibly others) appear on the memorials
and/or rolls of honour for both this parish and Kemerton, so it may be worth checking both parishes.

Maurice Festing is mentioned on his widow’s gravestone in Great Comberton churchyard.

The Lychgate at the churchyard entrance was dedicated as the War Memorial. The inscriptions in the timbers of the lychgate roof read:

Remember the Overbury and Conderton Men who gave their lives in the Great war that honour justice and love should rule Mankind

and:

1914-1918

The central dais in the lychgate has inscriptions on all four sides. Inscriptions are in block capitals, with V substituting for U: I have put the ‘U’s back for clarity.
On the side facing the road:

SEE TO IT YE LIVING THAT YE HERE DEDICATE YOUR LIVES TO THE CAUSE FOR WHICH WE DIED

and the side facing the church:

I WILL NOT CEASE FROM MENTAL FIGHT
NOR SHALL MY SWORD SLEEP IN MY HAND
TILL WE HAVE BUILT JERUSALEM
IN ENGLANDS GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND

The two longer sides read:
