A large cross on a stepped octagonal base in the churchyard. Carved in the stone of the base are these words:
“HAVE ???? HONOUR
ALL THOSE SONS
OF CHURCHDOWN
WHO WENT FORTH
TO SERVE IN THE
GREAT WAR 1914-1918”
GREATER LOVE
HATH NO MAN
THAN THIS
THAT HE LAY
DOWN HIS LIFE
FOR HIS FRIENDS”
The WW I names are on four dark coloured metal plaques, probably made of bronze. Going clockwise around the memorial are the WW I names (originals had one line with the name, following line with rank and regiment – I have combined the teo into one line for this transcript):
